About me
I’m Sarah,
I created One Step having been my Mother’s Carer for many years.
At times I struggled without other family or loved ones to help; this impacted our relationship and when I realised, we were both affected by the stresses this caused I knew it was time to seek some external support - for both our needs.
We, eventually employed an excellent Carer Support professional for two visits a week. On those days I was more relaxed, knowing I could switch off because Mum had seen someone other than me, she was safe and in excellent hands. It made a massive difference to us both.
Feeling lonely and overwhelmed, which I can now identify as Carer burnout, I sought some support from my G.P. who suggested I join their Carers Support Group. I did and went on to volunteer and help run the group. I used my professional experience to invite speakers and organisations along who could offer practical support, information and signposting. We listened to one another’s concerns in confidence and with understanding. I learnt a lot in a short space of time and used my existing skills to grow the group and its empowerment. In running and growing the group, I also received support from the group members for my own situation.
Mum’s needs increased and I had to take jobs with flexibility to maintain and income whilst supporting her.
I gained invaluable experience working for the NHS, in 1:1 Care Support, Education and Housing sectors. This experience, coupled with over 10 years working for the British Army identified a natural affinity to help others. The Caring community was a natural fit along with anyone in a supportive or isolated environment.
At the age of 85 my mother passed away and I took a break to
decide on my next chapter. I soon missed the interaction with people and knew I had more to offer to the Carers community.
One Step was incepted to offer bespoke support, care, advocacy and practical support to anyone who needs it but especially, Carers, Carees or families who may have a disability, medical need or sudden onset condition that upends their lives.
The NHS, charities and organisations can be amazing in their respective fields. Sadly, with the number of people requiring support, the need is outstripping demand and if One Step can help anyone to have a better quality of life - One Step At A Time, my decision to help others makes it an honour to do so.
Anyone Caring for someone, be it family or not can seek support from a number of charities in our area. See our FAQ page for links to some of the main ones, or just ask us.
Please take a look at the Services and Testimonial sections and if you have any questions or would like to book a chat over a cuppa or phone call I look forward to hearing from you.
